Data is the new gold and one of a company’s most important assets. As businesses accumulate larger amounts of data and store it across the enterprise—from on-premises data centres to hybrid cloud architectures—it’s more important than ever to keep that data safe and accessible.
Every company needs a reliable data backup and system recovery solution to help it survive—and even thrive—in the event of a disaster.
Ransomware is a Disaster
Backing up your data and systems is an essential practice. Especially now that data threats are on the rise, such as ransomware attacks, which can disrupt business operations and result in financially disastrous data loss.
According to Veeam®’s Data Protection Trends Report 2022, 88% of enterprises believe their cybersecurity strategies are fully or mostly integrated with their BC/DR strategy. This reaffirms the fact that ransomware is a disaster, and that the majority of industry organisations are aware of this.
While three out of every four businesses (76%) have been subjected to at least one attack, 24% have either not been attacked or are unaware of it. 42% of those attacked were user-activated, which means they clicked on a malicious link in a spam email, and 43% were due to a lack of diligence on the part of an administrator (patches, credentials, etc.).
It can take weeks for ransomware to penetrate a company’s systems completely. During that period, the malicious parties have complete access to your personal files, folders, and financial information, which they might easily steal and resell on the dark web or use as leverage to force you to pay again.
Remember that paying the demanded ransom for your data that’s been taken hostage by ransomware doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll get all your files back. On average, businesses were only able to retrieve 64% of their data, implying that more than a third of data is lost forever. Figure 1 depicts the percentage of data that an organisation was able to recover over the course of a year following an attack.
While these businesses were able to recover a part of their data, can you imagine not being able to retrieve half or less of the data that might make or break your business? Hence, the more reason why you should make a backup strategy a part of your cyber hygiene.
Secure Backup is Your Last Line of Defence
