This week, the best of Malaysian tech corporations, entrepreneurs, ecosystem partners, infrastructure builders, startups, investors, regulators as well as delegations from around ASEAN and the world travel to Kuala Lumpur as Malaysia reinforces its position as an established destination for local and global tech businesses with the launch of the first ever Malaysia Tech Week 2019 (MTW19).
MTW19 is a city-wide festival of industry-driven events featuring innovation showcases, business matching opportunities, pitching platforms and an abundance of networking opportunities for all participants to connect and innovate.
The inaugural event was officially launched earlier this morning by the Minister of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia, YB Gobind Singh Deo, and Surina Shukri, CEO of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), witnessed by over 1,000 guests consisting of local and international industry players.
Surina Shukri, who gave the morning’s opening remarks, started off by commenting on how MTW is a manifestation of Malaysia’s increasingly vibrant digital ecosystem. She said, “It demonstrates the opportunities, capabilities and partnerships that exist within the Malaysian technology realm. MTW19 is a first-of-its-kind event where the local and international tech communities not only get to immerse themselves in everything digital but also experience what Malaysia has to offer.”
She also commented that MDEC has a goal of making sure that technology is not just a vertical or an industry but is leveraged on to build an ecosystem and economy that is a win-win across all segments of society.
“MDEC is proud to be leading Malaysia’s journey in digital economy and it is our utmost pleasure to have the industry’s support. With that, I would like to thank our partners in making MTW19 a success. We believe that together, we will take Malaysia’s digital economy to greater heights,” she enthusiastically added.
Meanwhile, YB Gobind Singh Deo said that Malaysia’s digital evolution journey began over two decades ago with the country’s vision to create an economy founded on technology to drive digital transformation. Now, he said, Malaysia has gone “seriously digital”, as a result of over RM330 billion in total cumulative investments made by MSC over the years, creating over 180,000 jobs.
As testament to Malaysia’s stature as one of the top investment destinations in the world, YB Gobind Singh Deo shared that Malaysia has in recent years been named the most attractive emerging market in Asia, ranked 2nd in terms of ease of doing business in ASEAN as well as global competitiveness among ASEAN nations, and the 8th most startup friendly country in the world in 2019.
“Malaysia is a location of highly skilled talents, thriving within a vibrant business ecosystem founded on world-class infrastructure. Malaysia is charging forward and upward in the technology and digital space, and MTW19 is a clear indication of how far we have come and can still advance,” he said. “I hope MTW19 will enable deep networking, wide connectivity and lasting partnerships amongst all digital and technology players. This industry needs your passion, innovation and investments to grow and evolve.
MTW19, which kicked off yesterday with FinTech Week and MyDroneX Expo, is the first major event in a month of industry-driven tech events which aim to showcase Malaysia as the ideal digital destination and ASEAN gateway. This month-long celebration will continue with Wild Digital and Beyond Paradigm, happening on the 3rd to 4th of July and 17th to 18th of July respectively.
