From being part of the team that built the Google File System to someone who is referred to as the “Father of Hyperconvergence”, Mohit Aron is a technologist who has always held the aspiration to change the world of technology and take what is possible to the next level. As a testament to this, Mohit went on to establish Cohesity in 2013, a company whose mission is to radically simplify data management, making it easy for businesses to protect, manage and derive value from their data across a variety of IT environments.
“Just like a smartphone has to start with being a great phone and Google had to start with being a great search engine, we, at Cohesity, started with great enterprise backups,” Mohit explains about the vision behind the creation of the company, of which he was the brain behind the code and early tech. Cohesity is now one of the most popular data protection service providers in the world, with a valuation of over USD $3.7 billion.
How Cohesity Is Redefining Business Resilience
As they say, in life and in business, timing is everything. Cohesity was founded right at the cusp of the wave of the cloud and digital transformation, which has not only increased the importance and value of data tremendously but also made data centre operations more complicated than ever.
For one, as IT systems became more varied and dispersed, data silos became one of the biggest problems that posed a barrier to data-driven success. For instance, backups could be found in one silo; and analytics could be found in another silo. All these silos were bought from different vendors and it was a big manageability headache. To address this issue, the idea was to build one logical platform which could make data easy to manage and consolidate and enable greater business resilience no matter how much the organisation grows. And that is exactly what Mohit and the team at Cohesity were able to accomplish.
The need for innovation in the data protection and management space, which Cohesity has delivered consistently since its inception, has contributed greatly to the company’s own rapid growth – evidenced by the announcement of record-breaking financial performance in its third-quarter 2021 results. Among its most noteworthy financial successes include:
Strong Subscription Business: Cohesity achieved a nearly 80% increase Year-over-Year (YoY) (Q3/Q3) in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR), further emphasising the success of the company’s subscription-based software model.
Rapid Customer Growth: Cohesity saw more than a 40% increase YoY (Q3/Q3) in the number of customers doing business with the company, bringing its customer count to nearly 2,500 globally. In Q3, Cohesity recorded its largest transaction from a single customer in company history.
Strong Traction Across Verticals and the Fortune 500: The company added 30 financial services customers to its roster in Q3, bringing the total number of customers in that vertical to nearly 350 globally. The company saw a nearly 40% increase YoY (Q3/Q3) in the number of Fortune 500 accounts doing business with Cohesity. Cohesity customers include three of the top five pharmaceutical companies globally and two of the top five Fortune 500.
“Our record-breaking results show that more businesses are trusting Cohesity to manage their data in a world in which hybrid cloud is the norm, ransomware attacks are soaring and the need to derive value from data has never been greater,” said Mohit. “Customers are also embracing Cohesity because we give them the flexibility to manage data their way — either directly, via our ‘as-a-Service’ offerings, or a combination of both — all through one platform with one user interface. No other vendor today offers this type of choice and radical simplicity.”
Ongoing Innovation a Key Factor of Cohesity’s Continued Growth
As Mohit mentioned, Cohesity was founded with one principle in mind: to radically simplify data management. In order to realise this vision, over the years Cohesity has developed solutions that make it easy for modern organisations to protect, manage and derive value from their data across their data centre, the edge as well as cloud environments.
Today, Cohesity offers a full suite of services that are consolidated on one multi-cloud data platform. These include backup and recovery, disaster recovery, file and object services, dev/test, and data compliance, security, and analytics – empowering businesses to not only simplify data management but also mitigate threats from ransomware attacks, accelerate their move to the cloud and eliminate mass data fragmentation.
Here are some of the recent innovations that Cohesity has unveiled, which are propelling modern data management and fostering business resilience:
Healthcare Provider Rapidly Recovers Data with $0 Ransomware Payment: After being hit by a ransomware attack, Sky Lakes Medical Centre relied on Cohesity’s anti-ransomware capabilities to successfully recover all of its servers and applications -- without paying a penny of the ransom. Not only did the effort save the healthcare provider money and preserve trust in its systems but it also helped the company to continue to treat patients largely without disruption, potentially saving lives.
Sustained Focus on Security: Cohesity announced its strategic partnership with In-Q-Tel, Inc., a not-for-profit strategic investor that invests in innovative technology solutions to support the national security communities of the U.S. and its allies. As part of this partnership, In-Q-Tel has invested in Cohesity. Cohesity also expanded its C-suite with the addition of Brian Spanswick, the company’s first Chief Information Security Officer. Spanswick hosted an expert conversation with the Secret Service on tips to prevent ransomware.
SaaS expansion to Canada: Cohesity announced the general availability of DataProtect delivered as-a-Service to Canadian customers. This Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) offering empowers Canadian customers to focus on managing their data while Cohesity takes care of the underlying infrastructure hosted on AWS.
Comprehensive Support for Microsoft 365: With the Cohesity Pegasus 6.6 release, Cohesity broadened protection for Microsoft 365. Cohesity now supports Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Public Folders, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Groups. Cohesity is delivering SLAs that extend well beyond Microsoft’s 30-day defaults.
Data Management Training and Certifications: Every industry is looking for IT professionals who can modernise data infrastructure, protect and recover from cyber threats, and do more with data. To address the growing need, the company launched Cohesity Academy, a comprehensive data management training and certification program, that enables IT professionals to advance their skills and expertise, which can also help companies achieve critical business outcomes.
Industry Accolades: Cohesity was named a Customers’ Choice in the 2021 Gartner Peer Insights ‘Voice of the Customer’: Distributed File Systems and Object Storage, following being named Customers’ Choice in the Gartner Peer Insights ‘Voice of the Customer’: Data Centre Backup and Recovery Solutions. Cohesity was also featured among CRN’s Coolest Cloud Companies for 2021 and was named in the prestigious Forbes Cloud 100 list for the second year in a row last year. Not only that, but Cohesity was also recently named as a Leader in the 2021 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup and Recovery Software Solutions.
