“IBM is a 100-year-old company with a strong legacy in innovation and technology eminence.
At IBM Malaysia, we see three technologies that stand out in the storage arena. The three are flash system, storage optimisation and storage virtualisation. Let me walk you through them one by one.
First, flash systems or all flash arrays are essentials for any organisation that places high priority on cost efficiencies. The benefits of flash systems are too important to ignore. For starters, users do not need to make any or if needed, make only, minimal changes to applications or the database to realize the significant gain of deploying flash systems. Customers planning to go green can start with flash systems and they can quickly see significant reduction in energy use. And of course, the most important criteria – performance. The performance of flash systems is un-parallel as you will immediately see a boost in productivity and time savings which is a boon for any business or organisation.
In fact, we see flash systems as a game changer in 2015 due to its simplicity and complementary SPEED. Flash Systems allows you to store more with less with real-time compression and elastic Storage with LTFS (linear tape file system) allows smart placement of data on the most cost effective tier, extreme scalability and cross site redundancies.
Now the second stand-out technology are those related to storage optimisation. We believe storage optimization is vital as the volume of data moving around across all networks continues to rise. According to IDC, data is growing twice as fast as computing power. Compounding growth of storage would be the management of data that will become more challenging with each passing day.
Therefore having the right type of storage optimisation technology is important to meet the growth of data efficiently. And most organisation would want to do this by not adding more hardware. Another consideration is the placement of data for accessibility. Placing the data on the correct tier on the most cost effective media [within service level agreements] would be a smart move.
The third technology that we believe will gain traction this year is storage virtualisation. Although storage virtualisation is not new in the market but with server virtualization being the new normal, we reckon storage virtualisation would be the next area for clients to embark on. There are pockets of storage virtualisation being adopted across various industries but the tipping point has yet to come."
