Short-stroking on HDDs that writes on the outer tracks of disk drives does reduce the amount of movement required for the disk drive arms and heads to read and write data and also optimizes the performance of the disk drive. However, there is a significant wastage due to under-utilised capacity that can come to 30% and sometimes even reach 99% in worst case scenarios.
With flash performance being one, ultra-high speed, it does not require special techniques and therefore does not have the same overhead costs to achieve them. Having no mechanical parts too makes flash less prone to breakages or malfunctions and therefore being easy to maintain and scale when necessary.
Replication and data protection capabilities are now a built-in feature for flash, giving enterprises the added confidence in where they have their data stored. It also reduces operation downtime to nearly zero in case of outages and this is a significant area of concern to plugging revenue holes.
