DSA Awards Ho Wing Leong of Cloudera Wins Technical Consultant of the Year

It’s no big reveal, that your company is made by the people who put in the extra miles. At DSA we believe that recognising these amazing humans is very important - not just for the sake of ego, but also to say a massive thank you for their hard work and efforts.
This year, we have an award category that deserves an entire post on its own – the best data and storage technical consultant of the year. This person would be an individual who went the extra mile for their customers, and is extremely experienced and knowledgeable in the field.
For this category alone, we thought it important to put in the extra effort to go through all the submissions with some additional professional insights.

This year we had 3 judges – Paul Talbut from SNIA, Chin Jun Fwu from IDC and Ben Woo from Neuralytix.

Paul Talbot - Global Educattion Director at SNIA Chin Jun Fwu - Senior Analyts at IDC Ben Woo - Principle Analyst at Neuralytix

All 3 are highly respected industry heavy hitters with not only years of experience, but also extremely knowledgeable about the data and storage arena - there input and eventual decision adds real weight to the selction prgress and the standing of this particular award.
We received many impressive nominations and after compiling a list of bios, we brought it to the judges for careful selection, evaluation, combing through and nit-picking through all details. After much discussion, we have shortlisted 5 names, and picked out a winner, with 2 honourable mentions.
This year, we honour Ho Wing Leong from Cloudera. In fact, we won’t tell you how awesome he is, we’ll let his customers tell you. We’ve attached below an excerpt from a long testimonial we’ve received from a customer he was engaged with.

“Wing Leong has always provided substantial suggestions, rather than generic thoughts and advice. [We] needed many solutions for extensive problems and Wing Leong always looked at our problems individually and connected us with the most suited professional from Cloudera to resolve our inquiries in the most efficient and timely manner.”

Amongst all the candidates, Wing Leong impressed judges with his dedication to customers and his active efforts in working closely with internal support teams of some of the largest telecommunications, financial services and government entities in the region. Not only does he take time to be on site during system upgrades to ensure smooth deployments, he is also a regular speaker at events around the region to teach and spread the word on Big Data.
Wing Leong’s submission was certainly impressive and the victory in claiming the top spot as the best ASEAN data and storage technical consultant of the year is well deserved.
We would like to give special mentions to 2 exceptional individuals, Heoh Chin Fa and Rahul Vijayan of RedHat. Amongst the many nominations, it was a very tight race for Wing Leong with these 2 individuals. While Chin Fah and Rahul were both very impressive, they lost out just by a tiny bit – where we think the evidence on providing customer focussed services across the region is slightly lacking for both of these exceptional gentlemen.
However, we would like to take note of the exceptional contribution of both Chin Fah and Rahul towards the community.
Chin Fah is a well-known figure in the storage industry in Malaysia. Currently an independent storage consultant, nominations praised his extensive knowledge as well as active participation in the community as well as publicising knowledge on data technology.

“Chin-Fah has made a lasting contribution to the technology sector in Malaysia through his commitment to evangelism and community-building, principally by establishing and driving forward SNIA Malaysia, and also through many contributions to Big Data Malaysia. Chin-Fah is a trusted advisor to many because he is a skilled communicator and industry leader with plenty of passion for (and hands-on technical capability with) the data technology sector.”
Rahul is a Senior Solutions Architect at Red Hat ASEAN, and also another candidate that was well loved by the judges. He edged out in his contributions to the open source community. He is a regular speaker in events regarding open source, and is active in publicising open source storage technology.
“Rahul has been a strong open source advocate who believes that open source technologies will change the IT storage landscape forever by lowering the cost of storage without sacrificing any of the enterprise capabilities that makes data secure, available and recoverable. His efforts within 2016 has helped to spread the adoption of open source storage software across all industries including governments, banks and telecommunication companies. His efforts in 2016 has been huge not just to the company where he works but more importantly to the entire open source community where he shares his passion about how open innovation is driving the future of storage.”
With that, we would like to congratulate Wing Leong, and also give our appreciation for Chin Fah and Rahul. Thank you for your efforts this year, as well as sharing your passion with the community. We are sure you will continue to do great work for your customers and within the community.
