Panelists at the CA Expo ’13 in Hong Kong agree that mobility and cloud computing are gaining traction in the enterprise, and that security, manageability and compliance will continue to be an on-going discussion among IT professionals, as well as in the executive boardroom.
“In many organizations, IT is also responsible for data security. Where business units drive what projects IT must prioritize, it becomes incumbent upon the CIO and his team to ensure that a strategy is in place that enables the accelerated delivery of business applications while ensuring the company fulfils its security commitments,” said Fuller Yu, Head of Technology Risk, Group Technology Services, AIA Group.
Cloud computing has introduced a paradigm shift in how businesses use IT, resulting in a greater willingness to try new ideas. Businesses are more willing to embrace new technologies or channels to engage customers in a deeper way and across a larger demographic target. This approach impacts one central role of IT: as gatekeeper of company information.
Ageas Insurance Company (Asia) Limited CIO Henk Ten Bos warned that mobility, like cloud computing and social media, should be viewed as a transformation journey. “It’s about implementing change. And the change is not something that happens immediately. When we introduced mobile apps a decade ago, we were presented with on-going technical and support challenges. Today with maturing technology, we’ve significantly improved the way we support sales with the right tools that will enable them to be out providing financial advice to customers,” he elaborated.
The panel also agreed that as technologies like cloud computing and mobility continue to evolve, IT must adapt more quickly to new demands expected of it and become more of a business enabler.
“With cloud computing, mobility and other dynamics, the role of IT must evolve from keeping the lights on (in the data centre) to delivering business service innovation,” said Lionel Lim, President, Asia Pacific & Japan, CA Technologies.
“The successful IT professional of the future must view his or her role as an advisor to the Board offering guidance on how to use technologies like mobility and cloud to achieve the business objectives of the company,” Lim added.
