Making the Right Investment in Maturing Security

The urgency to prioritise cybersecurity continues to grow for organisations of all types and sizes. With the speed at which things are changing in the world of cybersecurity, if they aren’t on top of their game, they will be putting their business at great risk. New threats are appearing on a daily basis and attackers are continuously evolving their techniques making it difficult to keep up. Consequently, most IT and security professionals feel they are under tremendous pressure to find ways to address the never-ending cyber threats.

With the biggest ransomware outbreak in history (WannaCry), followed by the biggest data breach (Equifax) happening just last year, one could be forgiven for thinking that we are not making much progress in our fight against cybercriminals and possibly even going backwards in the fight against cybercrime.

Although times may look bleak, defending against the onslaught of attacks is not an insurmountable task and there is light at the end of the tunnel. A good start is by keeping up-to-date with the current threats and managing them effectively. Having the basic software and infrastructure is imperative for any organisation to remain protected, but that is not enough in today's always-on and always-connected environment. Organisations needs to be proactive in making sure every aspect of their cyber environment is secure from threats.

Companies like CrowdStrike are focused on giving the organisation the security options that most are struggling to identify and understand. By making them more resilient and proactive in defending against cyber attacks, incidents and breaches, the CrowdStrike team improves the maturity of the organisation's cybersecurity capabilities. This creates an understanding of the possible risk factors and addresses ways to improve the security posture and maturity of the organisation in the face of these threats.

Some of the areas that CrowdStrike look into when working with your organisation include:

  • Staffing

  • Processes

  • Endpoint detection and response

  • Documentation

  • Technologies

Having a mature mix of security technologies is not an easy task. Deciphering the right combination is not a one-size-fits-all solution and can be a real challenge for organisations with little or no cybersecurity experience. Therefore, having the right assistance in identifying and prioritising technical capability gaps is of utmost importance and likely the first step before attempting to venture into a marketplace that has everything to offer and more.
The CrowdStrike team would recommend creating and maintaining a "threat detection framework" that would assist the organisation to track the use cases they wish to detect, mapping them to the specific tools that they would require for their capability and associated data. With this information at hand, it will make it easier to manage the security infrastructure of the organisation as it scales.
