Integrated Systems Explained

Integrated Systems, is a generic term which is used to describe the close physical grouping of the core elements of a datacentre in a software-centric architecture. Integrated systems bring together compute, network and storage usually on commodity hardware. Integrated Systems is a way to implement scalable datacentres that are much more easily deployed, managed and scaled as compared to legacy systems.

Converged architecture is an example of an integrated system, and as cloud class computing becomes a requirement of all IT departments hyperconverged has emerged as a class of integrated system that underpins the flexible, scalable computing that can respond to unpredictable demands of today’s data driven business.

Integrated system should be easy to scale in small increments usually by simply adding nodes into a cluster in the case of a hyperconverged implantation. The tightly configured hardware components should work without low level configuration, with a software defined management layer abstracting that complexity.  The Integrated System approach is fast replacing legacy hardware platforms built on individually configured compute, storage and networking.  This approach delivers the real benefits of highly virtualised environments without restriction.

Integrated systems are well suited to virtualised workloads that need to be highly available and highly scalable. In addition, the management via software layer should enable more workloads and infrastructure to be managed by smaller teams. 

Enterprises faced with removing the shackles of legacy infrastructure can implement integrated systems alongside existing architecture, move workloads as they virtualise and have a much easier path to hybrid cloud adoption.  Integrated systems are helpful in enabling the inevitable IT transformation journey that companies are currently on.

Integrated systems are synonymous with the concept of web-scale computing. Increasingly Integrated systems are using in built intelligence to ensure predictable non-disruptive performance as infrastructure scales. This is critical for IT shops to be able to offer cloud like consumption of resources for all applications whether on cloud or on premise. 

Nutanix, is a perfect example of a company that has run with the integrated system concept. They have been dubbed the next-generation enterprise cloud platform company and leader in the 2016 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Integrated Systems for the second year running. They are a clear example of an Integrated Systems technology delivering very tightly integrated compute, virtualisation and storage to deliver what in effect is an enterprise cloud platform – which in turn is the real promise of integrated technology.
